The fatal shooting by police of a 43-year-old black man has stoked long-simmering tensions over race and policing in this city, with its large African American population and high levels of segregation.
In some ways, the shooting of Keith Lamont Scottdefies the narrative of police violence against black men that has inspired the Black Lives Matter movement. Charlotte, an embodiment of the New South, has a black police chief and a progressive political reputation. And the officer who shot Scott, according to authorities, is black.
But the reaction of many in the city’s African American community has been visceral and sharply at odds with official accounts.
Activists and Scott’s family have disputed nearly every detail that has emerged about Tuesday’s shooting, leaving residents of North Carolina’s largest city grappling with two conflicting narratives.
One person was seriously injured Wednesday night after shots were fired during protests near the Ritz-Carlton hotel in downtown Charlotte, according to the Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency. Authorities said a civilian fired the shots.
Hotel managers closed the hotel and barricaded it with furniture, and police in riot gear fired tear gas at protesters and blocked streets.

BBC NEWS: Earthquake in central Italy leaves at least 38 dead

In the heart of earthquake-hit Amatrice in Italy A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck central Italy, leaving at least 38 people dead and 150 missing, as rescuers search for survivors.
Many of the dead were in Accumoli, close to the epicentre, and a short distance away in Amatrice, which was largely reduced to rubble.
The village of Pescara del Tronto was levelled to the ground and the number of dead was expected to rise.
The quake hit at 03:36 (01:36 GMT), 100km (65 miles) north-east of Rome.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi paid tribute to the volunteers and civil defence officials who had rushed to the scene in the middle of the night and used their bare hands to dig for survivors,
The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10km and its intensity was compared to that of the Aquila earthquake in April 2009 in which 309 people died.
Some buildings in the capital shook for 20 seconds as the quake struck the regional border area of Umbria, Lazio and Le Marche. It was felt from Bologna in the north to Naples in the south. Some 80 aftershocks have been reported since.

Warning from the South African Weather Service Heavy rain & flooding expected for the Western Cape
CAPE TOWN / JOHANNESBURG
Disaster Management officials are on high alert as an intense cold front batters the Cape Peninsula.
There were heavy downpours overnight, accompanied by strong wind and cold temperatures. Snowfall is also expected in some parts of the province. Weather forecaster Henning Grobbler says the Cape is in for the chilliest weekend so far this winter.
“The cold front has gone through from last night and there’s been a fair amount of rain. Cloudy and cold weather be expected today for the Cape Town region and there may still be some showers during the course of this morning, including this afternoon.”
WEATHER ALERT / WARNING
Cape Town – The South African Weather Service has warned of disruptive weekend snowfall over mountain passes in the South, Central and North Eastern parts of the Western and Eastern Cape. Parts of the Western Cape can expect Heavy Rains & Flooding throughout the weekend!
The Eastern Cape can expect a 30% chance of rain except along the coast where a 60% chance of rain can be expected. The Northern Cape can expect a 30% chance for rainfall in the south-western parts and a 60% chance in the areas surrounding Sutherland and Calvinia.
The entire Western Cape can expect rainfall and an 80% chance of rain is expected in the western parts of the province as a cold front makes its way from the south-west.
This as a cold front is set to sweep over the Western and Eastern Cape from Friday, followed by a ridging high pressure system that will result in a deep layer of moisture, with low-freezing levels expected over the Eastern Cape.
The SA weather service forecasts showers can be expected in places on Friday, together with snowfall over the high terrain expected from mid-morning on Friday.
GAUTENG
Meanwhile a cold front is expected to hit the Gauteng this weekend. Temperatures in Gauteng will reach their lowest on Sunday with temperatures between 16 and 17 degrees.
Forecaster Jan Vermeulen says the cold front is only expected to clear up by Tuesday. “It will become cold on Sunday and we have a cold front coming in on Sunday, but we don’t expect any rain.”

FLOOD WARNING SOUTH AFRICA.
Dear friends,
It has been a very productive week @ Morningstar Ministries with Rick Joyner.
During my time here the Lord spoke to me concerning heavy rains and flooding in South Africa.
I thought to post it after I arrived back in South Africa but waiting for the Airport shuttle grants me the oppertunity to post the warning right now.
As I prayed about it I felt saw the Southern parts of SA being worst affected- The whole Cape province.
Please pray with me for rain but against destructive flooding.
We Pray for:
* Rain on our nation.
* Bind destructive flooding.
* Pray for lives to be spared and protected.
* Wisdom for the Local Government in handling the situation.

The UK’s decision to keep the Pound, instead of the Euro, was wise. An unexpected decrease in the value of the Pound, that will shock the people, was seen. This will only be temporary as the Pound will regain its strength. Volatility between the Pound and the Euro will continue, causing uncertainty in the stock markets and affecting profitability in the banking and business sectors. This insecurity will cause industrial growth to stall.
All avenues of growth seem to be exhausted. Inspiration is needed. Through the stall in industry, people will put their trust in God again and He will bring inspiration for the next season of economic growth.”

The pound has fallen to levels not seen since 1985 following the UK’s referendum vote to leave the EU.
Shares have also been hit. The FTSE 100 index began the day by falling more than 8%, then regained some ground to stand 2.5% lower.
The more UK-focused FTSE 250 fared even worse, down 8% in early afternoon trading.
Banks were hard hit, with Barclays and RBS falling about 30%, although they later pared losses to below 20%.
The FTSE 100 ended the day 3.15% or 199.41 points lower.
The pound’s dramatic fall started overnight as the outcome of the referendum became clear. At one stage, it hit $1.3236, a fall of more than 10%.
By early afternoon, it had partially recovered, but was still nearly 8% down on the day.

The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union is already shocking markets and has sent the British Pound plummeting.
As British citizens left polls last night, markets began to react as analysts predicted the vote was close, then that the Brexit would indeed happen. The eventual results of the national referendum were 51.9 to leave and 48.1 percent to stay.
The value of the Pound relative to the U.S. Dollar took a nosedive for several hours, before settling at $1.37, according to Yahoo.
