Imported perishable food containers need to be re-routed to inland cold storage facilities, as KwaZulu-Natal facilities have been severely impacted by the recent unrest.
This is according to the South African Meat Processors Association (SAMPA) and the South African Association of Meat Importers and Exporters (AMIE SA).null
In a statement, the associations said that this is critical if South Africa wants to avoid chronic food shortages across the country, specifically for the poorest who rely on affordable chicken and meat products such as polony, as their primary sources of protein.
They said there are currently 290 reefer containers (temperature controlled containers) which require an urgent cold storage remedy, with many more containers en route from international markets to offload at the port of Durban.

Food and fuel shortages hit parts of South Africa
Staff Writer 4 months ago

There are long queues at food stores and petrol stations in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal as shortages are starting to hit the two provinces.
ENCA reported that people in Durban are scrambling to get fuel with some people queuing for hours to get into filling stations.
Many petrol stations have run out of fuel and do not know when they will get more fuel to serve their customers.
People in communities hit by looting say they are running out of basic essentials like bread, milk, and chronic medication.
