EARTHQUAKES:
No need for panic after Western Cape earthquake:
JOHANNESBURG – The Council of Geoscience said there’s no reason to panic after a small earthquake hit a Western Cape town on Wednesday morning.
The tremor was felt in Tulbagh at around 9:15am.
It measured 3.7 on the local Richter scale, adapted in 2010 for conditions in SA which has less seismic energy because of an older crust.
The tremor was caused by the same active fault line that resulted in the 1969 earthquake in Tulbagh, in which three people were killed.
Project Leader of Data Analysis at the Council for Geoscience Ian Saunders said it was difficult to say if further tremors were expected, but the earth movements in Tulbagh were usually minor.
